Head doctor sentenced to prison for taking bribes

The Győr Court of Appeals on Tuesday sentenced a doctor to four years imprisonment for taking bribes for years, the Győr Prosecutors Office announced.

The defendant, the head doctor at a Vas county hospital, demanded cash over and above the nursing fee officially paid by some patients’ relatives to the hospital, and for allowing patients relying on constant care to stay longer in his ward.

The defendant received over Ft 4 million from the relatives from March, 2013 to October, 2022.

The Szombathely Court, acting as a first instance court, sentenced the defendant to four years imprisonment on 23 counts of criminal acts for taking bribes, banned him from pursuing the medical profession for six years, fined him Ft 3 million and also ordered a confiscation of assets.

The prosecutor had appealed the sentence, seeking a stricter term, while the accused appealed for an acquittal.

The second instance court on Tuesday also found the doctor guilty but with a view to his elderly age it did not increase his sentence.
