Gov’t to tighten short-term rent rules in Budapest

The government only wants to tighten short-term home rents in Budapest, the Economy Ministry said on Monday after 26 tourism associations signed a letter arguing for a compromise between a complete ban and the current regulation for Airbnb-type of rents.

The ministry said the planned measures will not affect short-term rents for rural tourism purposes.

The government sees the review of Airbnb regulation as a housing issue at a time when “a housing problem has developed in Budapest, which particularly affects young people and young families".

The ministry emphasized that the government continues to co-operate with all professional organisations in the sector and is committed to maintaining a lively professional dialogue.
