Hungary spends most on sports in EU

Hungary devoted 1.7% of all public spending to sports and leisure services in 2022, more than double the EU average of 0.8%, according to Eurostat data.

Ranked second and third were Estonia and Sweden, both at 1.3%.

At the other extreme, Bulgaria was ranked at bottom with 0.2% of public spending earmarked for that purpose.

Hungarian households had a much smaller budget when it came to spending on sports equipment, which accounted for 0.5% of their expenditures, according to 2020 figures from Eurostat.

The corresponding figure was lower only in Slovakia and Bulgarian, at 0.2%. In contrast, Dutch households spent 1.9% of their income on sports equipment and services.
