Uber to return to Budapest in the summer

Uber will make its return to Budapest eight years after leaving the market but under a new model, working in partnership with Főtaxi, it was announced on Tuesday.

The ride-hailing company has signed similar partnership agreements in other cities. Uber will open the platform within days for prospective drivers to apply, offering incentives to the first to sign up.

It expects to hire 1,000 drivers by offering competitive wages, according to Eszter Kardos, head of Uber’s Hungarian operations.

Uber will build on the know-how of Főtaxi subsidiary, F Mobility, for dispatching services, but drivers and passengers will use the same Uber app in Budapest as elsewhere, she added.

In accordance with the law, clients can order a vehicle by phone as well as via an app.

The ride-hailing company suspended its service in Budapest in July 2016 because regulatory changes made it impossible to operate locally.
