Hungary curbs gas usage by 20%
Hungary last year managed to curb gas consumption by 20% compared to the average of the previous five years, exceeding the 15% target set by the EU for the second straight year, the Energy Ministry announced on Tuesday.
Member states agreed to reduce their gas consumption by 15% by March 31 compared to their average gas consumption in the period from 2017 to 2022.
Hungary reduced its consumption from August 2022 to the end of March 2023 by 20% compared to the reference period, above the 17.7% average in the EU, making the country one of the top performers.
Between early April 2023 and the end of March 2024, Hungary’s gas consumption was just over 8 billion cubic metres, according to the ministry, compared to the 10.3 billion cubic metres in the reference period.
For the calendar year, gas consumption was down 23% to 8.5 billion cubic metres in 2023 from 11 billion cubic metres in 2022.
The government’s position is that the composition of a country’s energy mix should remain with the member states’ purview, the ministry stressed.
