City bans Filipinos from driving buses
The city of Budapest has found a legal solution, via its service-ordering contracts, to ensure that no Filipino bus drivers will be employed by Arrivabus, a subcontractor of the Budapest Transport Centre, deputy mayor Ambrus Kiss announced at a press conference on Thursday.
Arrivabus operates 450 vehicles, about one-third of the total public transport bus fleet in the city.
Kiss added that the city has no direct control over subcontractors.
Kiss has repeatedly declared that the employment of this type of workforce goes against the city’s goals and broader socio-political goals, and ignores the domestic labour reserve.
He has also stated that the use of temporary contracted labour undermines labour rights and suppresses wages.
Citing a lack of local drivers, Arrivabus initiated the training of 20 drivers from the Philippines in October, who originally were to work in January. Drivers arrived in November for training but have not started to work.
Arrivabus said there has been a delay because their training has not yet been completed.
