Heavy fine for deceptive gaming company

GVH, the competition watchdog, has fined Deutsche Lotto- und Sportwetten Ft 345 million, because the Malta-based company deceived customers into thinking that they were dealing with state-owned gaming company Szerencsejáték in online gambling, it was announced yesterday.

The company operated the Hungarian-language website Lottoland which the GVH ordered to close in September 2023.

The company intentionally used names very similar to those of Szerencsejáték, while concealing its own name and contacts so that clients would not be able to tell which company they were in contact with, the GVH found.

Aggravating factors were that a section of the target consumer group is particularly vulnerable due to their gambling addiction, as well as the duration and intensity of the illegal practice over several years, and the reprehensible conduct of the company.

In addition, Szerencsejáték sued the operator of Lottoland for illegal practices and won a trademark abuse lawsuit against it.
