Szentkirályi is Fidesz candidate for mayor

Government spokeswoman Alexandra Szent¬királyi will be the Fidesz candidate for the position of mayor of Budapest, it was announced on Thursday.

Incumbent Gergely Karácsony responded by declaring that the mayor of Budapest is not a spokesperson for the government but for the people of Budapest.

Other opposition politicians made similar comments.

Szentkirályi, born in 1987, entered political life in Fidesz’s youth party Fidelitas, and led the Buda Castle chapter of the organisation in 2007-10.

She obtained a seat on the Budapest city council in 2010 then in 2014 was appointed deputy mayor for culture, education, social policy, youth policy, sports, environmental protection, tourism and the city’s urban image.

She was dismissed when Karácsony was elected mayor in 2019 and was appointed government spokeswoman in 2020.

Szentkirályi is married to Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.
