City closes some cinemas and museums

All city-run libraries and museums are to be closed, Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony said yesterday as he announced municipal measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

At a press conference with deputy mayors Erzsébet Gy. Németh and Kata Tüttő, he said the heads of theatres and cinemas run by the city have been notified that all performances must be suspended, setting the audience limit at zero, rather than the 100 permitted by a cabinet decree.

The requirement to board public transport buses by the front door is suspended, as is the sale of tickets on buses, in order to reduce risks and to protect bus drivers.

Tüttő said city council will not pass epidemiological measures in its own purview, but will rely on the government’s emergency task force.
