Tourism hit hard by cancellations

The situation in tourism is dramatic, head of the state tourism agency MTÜ Zoltán Guller told journalists on Thursday, adding that the government expects the virus peaking in June.

All hotel boats anchoring in Budapest have been cancelled until the end of April.

Based on data from the Tourism Data Centre, of the 163,500 bookings made for the second quarter 24% have been cancelled.

Guests from Germany, the top sending country, cancelled 14.9% of their bookings.

The share of cancellations is 43.2% from Israel, also 43.2% from Italy and 27.9% from Romania.

Domestic guests cancelled 14.9% of their bookings.

In Budapest, Chinese guests have cancelled 57% and Israeli guests 44% of their bookings.

MTÚ has stopped all its promotional campaigns until the pandemic ends. If everything goes well then tourism could reach its 2019 level within ten months, Guller said.
