Hungarian pavilion on schedule for Dubai Expo

The topping-out ceremony for the Hungarian pavilion at the 2020 World Expo in Dubai was held on Thursday.

Andrea Tóth, CEO of Expo 2020, the company in charge of the project, said everything is going according to plan.

Chief architect of the pavilion, Lőrinc Csernyus, said the timber structure bears the spirit of Imre Makovecz, the most prominent figure in Hungarian organic architecture. Makovecz designed the Hungarian pavilion for the 1992 World Expo in Seville.

The new building was assembled in Hungary before the parts were shipped separately to Dubai, Csernyus said.

The architect said he was surprised to find that wood is a completely unknown building material in Dubai.

The government commissioner for Hungary’s expo participation, Szabolcs Takács, stressed that the theme of the pavilion is water, a resource in which Hungary is rich.

The pavilion is expected to be completed by September 15. The World Expo runs from October 20, 2020 until April 10, 2021.
