Lookout tower burns down

A lookout tower on Fülöp hill in Révfülöp, Veszprém county, collapsed after catching fire early Thursday.

Volunteer and professional fire-fighters extinguished the fire while protecting the tower’s stone structure and the neighbouring grassy and wooded area, Disaster Control said.

Mayor Géza Kondor said the wooden structure of the tower may have caught fire after being struck by lightning. The nearly 22-metre tower was built by the local council at the turn of the millennium, and was equipped with a lightning-rod. A civil initiative is forming in the village to ensure that the lookout tower can be opened to visitors as soon as possible, the mayor said.
