80,000 Hungarians register to remain in UK

Around 80,000 Hungarian citizens have registered to remain in the United Kingdom following the end of the post-Brexit transition period ending December 31 this year, British ambassador Iain Lindsay told Inforádió on Tuesday.

Lindsay said that 99% of ordinary people have not noticed any changes since Brexit because EU regulations continue to be in force until the end of the transition period. He said these 11 months will give a chance for both parties to get adjusted to the new situation.

The ambassador emphasised the importance for Hungarians of the continued ability to live, travel, study and work in the United Kingdom without any restrictions. British, international and European law continues to guarantee the rights of Hungarians living in Great Britain, he continued.

Many things will depend on the agreements that are concluded on future relations in the next eleven months, and what changes will be implemented beginning January 1, 2021, Lindsay said. Talks on such changes will begin at the beginning of March, he added.
