MÁV to install 375 ticket machines

State railway company MÁV-Start will install 375 new ticket machines this year at a cost of Ft 4.6 billion, in addition to the existing 178 operating at railway stations, chairman and CEO Róbert Homolya announced on Monday.

The passenger rail company is also revamping its online ticket store, as some 40% of train tickets are now bought online, from vending machines or through MÁV’s mobile app.

The number of tickets sold via the mobile app rose from 880,000 in 2018 to 4.6 million in 2019.

The new vending machines, designed to be weatherproof and safe from vandalism, will predominantly be installed in suburban areas.

Test operations of the machines will begin in March and they will be rolled out until the end of the year.

In addition, travellers will be able to buy tickets for international trips at MÁV’s website from the end of this year.

Homolya expects developments to increase the share of ticket sales through electronic channels to 60%, at the level of the Austrian railway company.
