Dire times for mail carriers

All five mail carriers in the Békés county town of Battonya have resigned, citing an increase in their duties with no corresponding rise in pay.

A notice stuck on the door of the local post office states that jobs are available.

One of the five told RTL news that they could not bear the surplus tasks. He said his zone was enlarged a few months ago, but his monthly Ft 130,000 salary was not raised.

Magyar Posta told RTL that job recruitment is continuous and it is doing its best to deliver parcels on time.

A similar situation has developed in Tápiószele, Pest county, where letter carriers are also wanted, as residents go to the post office to collect their mail, and do not receive official letters in time.

The head of the post office in Kelebia, Bács county, killed himself last week. In his suicide note he wrote that he had worked for the postal service for 46 years but felt the situation is hopeless, due to Magyar Posta and the working conditions.
