Cabinet devotes Ft 12bn to Makovecz oeuvre

The cabinet has set aside Ft 12.4 billion to build, restore or expand 30 buildings by 20th-century architect Imre Makovecz, Napi reports.

The largest sum, more than Ft 2 billion, is to be spent on the Sárospatak Culture Centre and Library.

Another Ft 920 million is allocated to the construction of the Ascension ecumenical church in Budapest’s 17th District according to Makovecz’s designs.

Another major project is the restoration of the Onion House in Makó and related investment projects at a cost of Ft 730 million.

Makovecz died in 2011. His large-scale works include the Piliscsaba complex of the Pázmány Péter Catholic University, a high school in Sárospatak, the Onion House in Makó, a swimming complex in Eger and the Hungarian pavilion at the 1992 Seville World’s Fair.
