Rally planned for homeless people

The Hungarian Helsinki Committee, the Civil Liberties Union and the Street Lawyer Association are organising a demonstration on December 10, the, UN’s Human Rights Day, against the criminalisation of homelessness.

One purpose of the rally is to send a video message to the Constitutional Court judges, who declared in a resolution a year ago that according to the values of the Basic Law deprivation and homelessness are not compatible with the right to human dignity.

The organisers of the demonstration on Széll Kálmán tér want to highlight that deprivation is not a chosen way of life, but a state of social exclusion.

They add that the persecution of the homeless by the authorities does not make sense and is expensive.

The demonstration begins at 5.30 p.m., when homeless people can send video messages to the Constitutional Court judges.

The cabinet criminalised homelessness in a new way in October 2018, when the Basic Law was amended to state that living in public area as a way of life is illegal.
