Spar to reduce plastic in packaging

Spar will reduce the use of plastics by not covering certain dairy products such as sour cream with a plastic lid, the retail chain announced.

The company aims to reduce its plastics use by 5.5 tons annually.

Spar introduced reusable packaging for vegetable and fruit storage at its stores in September and allowed customers to use their own bags when purchasing these products.

Hungarian consumers are becoming more environmentally conscious every year, as 40% of shoppers preferred reusable bags and shopping bags, Spar said earlier.

Spar operates 570 stores in Hungary, including 188 as franchises, employing 13,000 people.

The retailer reported a 10% rise in net sales to Ft 617 billion last year.
