News websites in financial trouble

News website Mérce is launching a fund-raising campaign to ensure its continued operation next year, while local website Szabad Pécs suspended operations yesterday due to a lack of money.

Mérce, which does not publish paid ads, writes in a statement that it needs Ft 3 million in immediate aid and a regular monthly sum of Ft 500,000.

Mérce’s regular income has declined by 22% since January and it received half as much in one-off funds in the first ten months of the year as last year.

The website needs Ft 11 million as a one-off donation and a regular monthly support of Ft 1.5 million for one year of operations.

Editor-in-chief András Jámbor announced his departure last week. He is succeeded by his former deputy Nóra Diószegi-Horváth.

In its appeal for help, Szabad Pécs says it needs the regular support of 500 of its estimated 15,000-20,000 daily readers.
