Sigyn captain released from custody

Prosecutors have appealed against a Friday court ruling to terminate the arrest of the Ukrainian captain of the Viking Cruises hotel ship Sigyn and place him under supervision.

Budapest’s Sixth and Seventh District prosecutor’s office challenged the court ruling, arguing that the arrest earlier extended to November 30 continues to be justified as there is a danger that the suspect will flee or go into hiding.

Prosecutors stressed that the May 29 disaster, in which 27 people were killed when the Sigyn struck a smaller sightseeing boat, was one of the biggest accidents in the history of modern transport in Hungary.

As Ukraine does not extradite its citizens to other states, the threat of escape and hiding is large, they added.
