US senators demand answers from Cornstein

Ten US senators, including presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, and one member of Congress have expressed concern due to the relocation of the International Investment Bank from Moscow to Budapest and the state of media freedom in Hungary in a letter to US ambassador David Cornstein.

The letter describes the Orbán administration as “autocratic” and “anti-democratic”.

On the issue of freedom of the press, they say it is especially worrisome that Cornstein had asked Radio Free Europe to avoid negative stories and investigative reporting regarding the Hungarian situation.

Sanders and his colleagues ask several questions of clarification at the end of their letter, which was also forwarded to the US government.

Sources regularly consulted, with abbreviations used in text: Népszabadság (N); Magyar Hírlap (MH); Világgazdaság (VG); Napi Gazdaság (NG); Magyar Nemzet (MN); Népszava (Nsz); Kossuth Rádió news (KR); nightly TV news (TV).
