Hungary’s Oscar nominee chosen

Akik maradtak (“Those Who Remained”), a movie by director Barnabás Tóth, has been chosen as Hungary’s nominee in the international film category of the Oscar awards.

The American Motion Picture Academy will announce the five final nominees for the Oscar
on January 13, ahead of the awards ceremony to be held in Los Angeles on February 9.

The main characters in the story, set in Budapest after World War II, are a lonely gynaecologist and one of his young patients, a stubborn adolescent who expects her parents to return from a death camp.

The movie premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in the US a few days ago. Variety magazine called the Hungarian film “a fairy tale with excellent, moving performances”.

The Hungarian premiere will take place on September 19 in the Miskolc International Film Festival competition programme. The movie will then be screened in cinemas worldwide from September 26.

The movie is based on a novel by Zsuzsa Várkonyi.
