Fugitive police officer caught in Italy

Italian gendarmes on Sunday caught former Budapest Police senior officer Zsolt Porkoláb, who had fled the country after he was sentenced to three years in prison, Magyar Nemzet reports.

Porkoláb and his associate Ferenc Labanc, a former senior detective at Budapest Police, were sentenced in January for influence-peddling and taking the law into their own hands.

Porkoláb received official notice in the middle of June to start serving his prison term. However, he did not appear at the prison and a warrant for his arrest was issued in the middle of July.

After a European warrant for his arrest was issued on August 29, the National Defence Service learnt that the fugitive was in Italy.

Italian officers caught him on Sunday, and he is expected to be extradited to Hungary soon.
