Night flights to end over Budapest

Flights over Budapest during late night hours will be ceased, Budapest mayor István Tarlós told a press briefing on Thursday.

Tarlós announced that in the interest of improving the quality of life for residents near the Budapest airport, no take-offs or landings will be permitted between midnight and 5 a.m. Additionally, airplanes will be directed from the densely populated areas lying to the northwest of the airport to the southeast, which is more sparsely populated.

The number of stations gauging airplane noise will also be increased from six to seven.

Planes not complying with the new rules can anticipate fines of up to €1,000, Tarlós said.

The measures will enter into force in about two months’ time.
