Toxicologist: 800,000 alcoholics in Hungary

There are 800,000 alcoholics in Hungary, nearly one in every family, toxicologist Gábor Zacher told state television channel M1 on Monday.

Zacher said that Hungarians drink 14 litres of pure alcohol (96%) a year per capita and that 30,000 people die of an alcohol-related illness annually.

Drugs, by comparison, do not cause as many problems in Hungary: there are an estimated 20,000 consistent drug users, and 40,000 people die of diseases caused by drugs annually, he said.

A strategy on alcohol consumption comprised of a survey and a future vision are necessary to combat the problem, he said, because the dangers of drugs are often discussed but the topic of alcohol abuse is avoided.
