Szijjártó opens consulate in Vancouver

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó opened Hungary’s westernmost permanent consulate in Vancouver, Canada on Thursday.

He said that economic opportunities in the region, technological development projects occurring there and assisting the Hungarians who live there justify the decision to open the consulate.

In a dedication speech, Szijjártó said Canada is Hungary’s strategic partner and ally. As members of NATO, both countries take part in joint military operations and are trying to make the world safer by combating terrorism, which is increasing worldwide.

Szijjártó said that Canada is among the world’s most developed industrial countries, and that Hungary with its open economy finds it extremely important to boost bilateral economic relations.

Some 400,000 people with Hungarian ancestry live in Canada, many of them in the western part of the country.

The consulate in Vancouver is the third such office in Canada, following the embassy in Ottawa and the consulate general in Toronto.
