Physicians start returning home – Kásler

The number of Hungarian physicians working abroad has decreased, Human Resources Minister Miklós Kásler told a press briefing on Tuesday, adding that the negative trend experienced before 2010 has now passed.

Kásler said that 6,000 more physicians are currently working in health care than in 2010, something he attributed to more students pursuing their studies at medical universities and more opportunities to join residency training thanks to grants. He also said working conditions for physicians have improved.

The number of students at medical universities has risen by 30%, he added.

The basic salary of specialists and pharmacists has risen by Ft 207,000 since 2012, Kásler said. In 2019, the basic salary for physicians who completed their medical studies four or five years ago is around Ft 470,000, while that of a physician ahead of retirement is Ft 575,000.

Some Ft 280 billion more will be allocated for raising health care wages next year than in 2010.
