Nagy statue unveiled without ceremony

The black nylon was removed from sculptor Tamás Varga’s statue of the martyred prime minister Imre Nagy on Jászai Mari tér on Wednesday without any ceremony.

Tamás Wachsler, head of the Kossuth tér renovation project that led to the removal of the statue from the site for which it was designed near Parliament, told Népszava in April that no unveiling ceremony was planned.

Nagy’s memorial statue was secretly taken away from Vértanúk tere near Parliament in the middle of the night late last year despite protests.
