Second theatre to be built in Debrecen

The construction of the Latinovits Theatre in Debrecen, which began nine years ago, can now be completed with the help of EU funds.

Mayor László Papp said the supervisory committee of Romanian-Hungarian border region co-operation has approved subsidies for the project.

Construction works will resume in 2020 and the second theatre in the city will open in 2021.

The EU’s regional development fund is providing €13 million for completion of the theatre construction and establishing cultural co-operation with Romania.

The new theatre will have one performance space with 350 seats and another with 100-150 seats.

The recent decision ends a five-year struggle, said Fidesz MP and former mayor of the city Lajos Kósa.
