Decline in population speeds up

The natural decrease in Hungary’s population accelerated in the first three months of 2019, as there were 4.3% fewer births and 1.6% more deaths than in the same period of last year, the Central Statistics Office reported on Tuesday.

The number of new marriages also decreased, but not significantly.

In the first three months of 2019, 20,830 babies were born, 946 less than one year earlier.

The number of deaths decreased in the Pest region, but increased everywhere else.

The decline in the number of births is not only due to the shrinking number of fertile women, but also to the decline in the number of people planning to have children, the statistics office concluded.
