Imre Nagy statue delivered to new location

The statue of former prime minister Imre Nagy was re-erected in a new location on Jászai Mari tér in Budapest’s 13th District early Friday morning.

The statue of Nagy, who was executed for his role in the Hungarian revolution of 1956, remains covered by a black sheet which will reportedly be removed in late May or early June.

A wreath laying ceremony is to be held on June 16, the anniversary of Nagy’s execution in 1958 and of his re-interment in 1989.

The statue was controversially removed from Vértanúk tere in December to make way for a memorial paying tribute to the victims of the Red Terror.
