Cabinet to buy 3,000 electric buses

The cabinet supports the procurement of 3,000 electric buses and will fund the purchase in the present term of government, Prime Minister’s Office leader Gergely Gulyás told a press conference on Thursday.

Outlining decisions made by the cabinet on Wednesday, he said the cabinet discussed a report by Innovation and Technology Minister László Palkovics on procuring as many Hungarian-made buses as possible.

One aim, he added, is to convert public transport to electric buses, which would also help to meet emission targets and reduce pollution in big cities.

In answer to questions, Gulyás said the cabinet does not support the introduction of a congestion fee in the city.

On another issue, he said the use of metal sheds as departure gates for low-cost flights at Ferihegy airport will be terminated.

It would be good if the airport were in Hungarian state ownership again, but it is hard to find funds for that, he added.

He affirmed that the cabinet is ready to provide financial assistance to Wizz Air to launch daily flights between Budapest and Romania’s Székely region.
