March of the Living set for Sunday

Hungary’s March of the Living to remember the victims of the Holocaust will be held on Sunday in Budapest.

The walk will begin at Március 15 tér at 6 p.m. Sunday evening. Those taking part will proceed along the Jane Haining and József Antall Sr. riverside roads to the memorial Shoes on the Danube embankment near Parliament.

They will pay tribute to Haining, the head of a Scottish boarding school in Budapest, Scotland’s only Holocaust martyr.

As matron of the school, Haining sheltered Jewish children throughout the war until her arrest in 1944. She was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp and died there a few months later.

British secretary for Scotland David Mundell, a guest of honour of the event, will deliver the opening speech.

The hosts of the programme are Gábor Gordon, chairman of the board of trustees of the March for Life Foundation, and Iain Lindsay, the British ambassador to Hungary.
