Train conductors get body cameras

Train conductors in service on railway lines passing through Mátészalka, east Hungary have been wearing body cameras in response to a rise in insults and physical assaults by fare dodgers and passengers otherwise violating regulations.

State passenger rail company MÁV-Start is resorting to a warning campaign, and relying on the assistance of police and security personnel against attacks on its staff.

Those who commit violent acts against persons performing public duties can in theory be sentenced up to five years in prison, MÁV-Start said on Friday.

For the time being, eight conductors have been given body cameras on a voluntary basis.

The procurement of further body cameras is under way and they are expected to be used by conductors from the autumn in the suburbs of Budapest and on several lines throughout the country.
