Family not given meals in transit zone

The Hungarian Helsinki Committee reported that the European Court of Human Rights had to intervene for the eighth time since August because Hungarian authorities did not give meals to asylum-seekers waiting in the transit zone.

“An Afghan family of five has fallen victim to the cynicism and ruthlessness of the Hungarian state,” the NGO said.

A mother and her son, an adult, were denied meals for two and half days. They were only able to eat leftovers from meals given to the three small children in the family.

After the Helsinki Committee turned to the Strasbourg court, the court reminded domestic authorities that they have an obligation to feed asylum seekers.

The family has been able to eat together again since March 15.

The human rights organisation said Hungarian authorities have left people entrusted to them without meals in at least 14 cases to date.
