Food checks lead to Ft 8mn in fines

The national food safety office Nébih issued some Ft 8 million in fines during its seasonal check on foods last month, the Ministry of Agriculture announced on Thursday.

Officials carried out 3,312 checks, including inspections of 2,079 food distributors, 762 restaurants and 471 food producers.

The one-month campaign focused on products associated with Christmas and products at Christmas fairs.

In 14 cases, authorities temporarily suspended the sales or operations of the business.

Nébih officials issued 117 warnings for minor infringements of hygiene rules or the lack of provenance of products.

Some 17,500 food samples were examined, of which 425 had to be withdrawn.
