Over 200,000 Hungarians in Germany

The number of Hungarians living in Germany has more than tripled in the past ten years, website G7 reports, citing data from the German statistics office Destatis.

According to official data, more than 207,000 Hungarians – equivalent to 2% of Hungary’s population – were living in Germany at the end of 2017.

The actual number is probably higher because Destatis can only release data about those foreigners who are registered at German addresses.

This means that there are no data about those who are in Germany as employees of a Hungarian company, or who work semi-officially or unregistered.

It is clear from the data, however, that there is no stopping the rise of Hungarians living in Germany, Index observes. In 2017 their number rose by 15,000 – much less than the 28,000 in 2013, but 576 more than in 2016.
