Protesters cause damage to Parliament

Millions of forints worth of damage has been done to the Parliament building and Kossuth tér during last week’s demonstrations, the state news agency MTI reported on Wednesday.

Parliament’s press chief Zoltán Szilágyi told the news agency that the damage is still being assessed.

Two lead windows and several glass windows were broken at the main entrance to Parliament, while the outdoor stairs, bronze lions and nearby candelabras were stained with paint and eggs.

Paint and egg stains and burn traces can be seen on the wall of Parliament, as well as the square outside Parliament.

The Kossuth group of sculptures was daubed with paint, several pieces were torn off and the national flag pole was repainted.

Plants on the park were also damaged, while some benches were sprayed with paint, and others were torn from their place.

Szilágyi said restoration will take months. The person who painted the flagpole was caught by police and criminal proceedings were launched against the 31-year-old resident of Sopron. He admitted to painting the flagpole.
