More than 20 dead of exposure

Some 23 people have died of exposure, 16 of them because of tougher laws on homelessness, since the new regulations took effect on October 15, according to data provided by the Hungarian Social Forum.

The Forum therefore demands that the cabinet revoke its decree which classifies living in the street a misdemeanour, arguing that it has failed to live up to expectations.

Police data show that 292 people were cautioned for living in public spaces from October 15 to December 4 and misdemeanour preparatory proceedings were launched in ten cases.
