Statue of Nagy to be moved to Jászai Mari tér

The Committee for Prominent National Memorials has issued a preliminary permit for the relocation of the statue of 1956 prime minister Imre Nagy from its current place on Vértanuk tere to Jászai Mari tér.

The official explanation states that, following the renovation of Kossuth tér, the healing of scars caused by the Communist destruction of statues ends with the reconstruction of a memorial that stood on Vértanuk tere in 1936-45.

That memorial featured the names of hundreds of victims of Béla Kun’s Communist regime of 1919. A reconstruction based on photographs and documents will be completed in 2019.

Tamás Wachsler, head of the project company, confirmed that the Nagy memorial will be placed on the south side of Jászai Mari tér.
