District may tax Airbnb hosts

Budapest’s Eighth District is planning to levy a local property tax on homes which are used for short-term accommodation services such as Airbnb, according to a draft decree posted on the district’s official website.

The size of the tax to be introduced on January 1, 2019 will be an annual Ft 1,820 per square metre on the premises used for accommodation services.

The local authority would like to curb the rise in home prices and long-term rent caused by the short-term rental of flats, the draft decree says.

If this regulation remains isolated in one district and is not applied city-wide, then it will not curb home and rent prices, website Mérce argues.
