Household solar power takes off

The number of Hungarian homes powered by solar panels rose by 45% to 29,593 last year, data released by the energy regulator MEKH shows, adding that based on the first quarter figures, the increase could outstrip last year’s.

The number of household-scale power plants connected to the national power grid was around 20,000 in 2016.

MEKH collects data on homes powered by solar panels even though installing panels with such small-scale capacity does not require a permit. The capacity of most household power plants is below 5MW.

The number and capacity of domestic power generators has grown at a dynamic pace, of which solar energy accounts for 99.4%. Energy generated by them reached 241MW, a 46% annual increase.
