Train conductors afraid of attacks

The railway workers union VSZ is calling for an increase in the criminal penalty for those who physically assault ticket collectors, because the number of such attacks is rising.

The VSZ suggests that the prison terms for this crime be expanded from 1-5 years to 2-8 years, with more serious penalties if the attack is committed in a gang or with a weapon.

Stricter penalties alone would not be enough, the union said, arguing that security cameras should be installed on trains.

The latest attack occurred on Sunday night when a passenger travelling without a ticket beat up a ticket collector on the Budapest-Vác line.

State railway company MÁV reported 87 such attacks in 2017.
