Index starts crowdfunding campaign

Index temporarily shut down its home page on Monday morning as it began a crowdfunding campaign to reduce its financial dependence on its new owners.

Shortly after 11.45 a.m. Index posted an article by chief editor Attila Tóth-Szenesi who said they had done something unprecedented: “We turned Index off for a while, so that those who consider it important should feel what it would be like if we did not exist.”

He asked for financial support from readers “so that we will be less dependent on CEMP, which bought Index from who knows what funds”.

There are other professional media outlets in Hungary, but none are read by a million people a day, Tóth-Szenesi added.

Funds from donations will not go to the foundation but directly to Index.hu Zrt. The names of donors are treated confidentially.
