Wachsler confirms statue removal plan

Tamás Wachsler, head of the project company that will transform Vértanúk tere, confirmed to Magyar Hírlap that the statue of Imre Nagy will be removed.

He said the site-specific statue erected in 1996 may be transferred to Jászai Mari tér, but no final decision on where it will be placed has been made.

When installing the Nagy statue, the authorities did not take into account the fact that a memorial once stood there honouring the innocent victims of the “Red Terror” of 1918-19, and that and the name of the square also reflected the intention that the “cruelties committed by the Commune should not be forgotten,” he said.

That memorial, which stood for nine years from 1936, may be resurrected to replace the Imre Nagy statue, Wachsler said.

He confirmed that no vehicles will be allowed to pass through the square with the exception of BKK buses.
