Szabó shooting new film

Oscar-winning director István Szabó will begin filming his first movie in six years in early September, with support from the state, Index reports.

The state Film Fund will grant Ft 561.8 million to the film to be entitled Zárójelentés (“Closing Report”).

The story, based on an original script by Szabó, revolves around a professor of medicine who is unexpectedly pensioned off and returns to his native village to work as a local doctor. His energy, emotional and social conflicts help him find his younger self.

In this his primary school friend is his associate, and their fates become linked.

The movie will be produced by Pál Sándor and Attila Tőzsér. Szabó and Sándor have been making films for more than six decades but this is the first time that they will work together. The cinematographer will be Hollywood veteran Lajos Koltai, another of Szabó’s long-standing collaborators.

The premier is scheduled for the second half of 2019.

Szabó won the Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar for Mephisto in 1981. His last film was The Door in 2012, featuring Helen Mirren.
