180 died of exposure in winter

After 18 months of government secrecy, police yesterday confirmed that 180 people died of exposure last winter, two-thirds of them in their own home.

Most lived in Budapest and the poorer Borsod and Szabolcs counties.

The government only released the data after a court ordered it to in a case brought by the NGOs A Város Mindenkié and Utcajogász Egyesület.

Government politicians regularly avoided giving answers to the question in recent months.

A Város Mindenkié says this is a system-level problem, since the victims died of exposure mostly due to poverty.

Sources regularly consulted, with abbreviations used in text: Népszabadság (N); Magyar Hírlap (MH); Világgazdaság (VG); Napi Gazdaság (NG); Magyar Nemzet (MN); Népszava (Nsz); Kossuth Rádió news (KR); nightly TV news (TV).
