Physician jailed for taking “gratitude money”

An unspecified court meted out a two-year jail term to an orthopaedic surgeon in Budapest on nine counts of accepting bribes.

The doctor, who worked as a surgeon in a Budapest hospital during 2009-13, demanded money from several of his patients or requested a higher sum, not finding the “gratitude money” voluntarily offered by his patients to be insufficient.

The court also banned him from practising his profession for three years and from engaging in public affairs.

The defendant can be released on parole after serving one year of his prison term.

The prosecutor asked for a longer sentence while the defendant appealed for a more lenient sentence.
