Cargo theft gang uncovered

A gang of Slovak and Hungarian thieves stole the entire goods consignment of nearly 50 international cargo shipments over four years, police reported on Thursday.

An inquiry by the National Bureau of Investigation found that the ten-member gang bought up transport firms via front companies.

The criminals then undertook international transportation online on behalf of the purchased companies.

Drivers equipped with fake documents picked up goods but stole them instead of taking them to their destination.

The gang was not selective but stole anything that fell into their hands – television sets, washers and dryers, car tyres and other products.

To avoid detection, the suspects abandoned the trucks used for transportation and destroyed the bogus documents.

The group caused over Ft 1 billion worth of damage during 2012-15 by setting up five Hungarian and five Slovak companies, stealing nearly 50 shipments in total.
