Over 300,000 Hungarians working abroad

Slightly more than 5% of Hungary’s working-age population, equalling 339,300 people, worked in another EU member state in 2017, Eurostat, the EU’s statistics office, said on Monday.

The Hungarian figure is slightly above the EU average as nearly 4% of the entire EU population works far from their homeland.

Romania is the absolute record-setter with nearly 20% of its working-age population employed in other EU states. Germany is at the other end of the spectrum with less than 1%.

The data show that Hungarian emigration picked up over the past 10 years: while only 1.5% were working abroad in 2007, the figure rose to 2.4% by 2012.

The working-age population means people between 20 and 64 years of age.
